Oscarrific!

Just days before the big dance here is my top ten list in particular order:

1. BENNY BUTTON-Brad Pitt. Need I say more? Okay, I will. Cate Blanchett. Need I say more? Okay, I will. An old man baby and little kid old man. Need I say more? Okay, I will. More wanting me leave movie long hour three nearly a made who Fincher David by way poetic and intriguing an in done was narrative reverse the. I know what you’re thinking, “if you’re going to write the words backwards, you should have written the letters backwards too dummy.” Well then call me F. Scott. He wrote a story about a small baby born in the body of an old man who goes out as an old man in the body of a small boy. Shouldn’t he have been born with a body as big as an old man? Would have hurt mom too much huh?

2. FROST/NIXON-Frank Langella deserves the nomination, but Michael Sheen should have gotten more attention. This isn't exactly my kind of movie and it still won me over big time. Well played Mr. Opie.

3. IRON MAN-Best comic book movie I’ve seen in a while. Robert Downey Jr. made this movie great. I went to this movie by myself and loved every second. A movie like this would never get nominated for big awards, but it's good to know there are still flat out entertaining blockbusters that aren't as ridiculous as Transformers or as serious as Dark Knight.

4. VICKY CHRISTINA BARCELONA-Woody strikes again. He’s just one of those writers like Tarantino. I just like to hear his characters talk. Interesting story, good acting, but great writing.

5. MILK-Gus Van Sant=best director. Period. (confusion about whether to put an actual period after the word period)

6. KUNG FU PANDA-Skidoosh!

7. REVOLUTIONARY ROAD-Better movie than the Reader. Another movie with amazing acting. Everyone should see this movie before getting married. Unless of course you actually want to get married.

8. DARK KNIGHT-Great movie. Unbelievable performance by Heath Ledger, but also the second most overrated movie of the year behind Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Batman Begins was better, but I still really liked this film. The Harvey Dent story could have been saved for the next film in the Christopher Nolan series. Oh, and who would have guessed that the only person crazier than Heath Ledger’s Joker character was Christian Bale in real life.

9. SLUMDOG MILLIONARE-Who doesn’t love a good love story. This is one that is told in a new and exciting way. To me, not the movie of the year, but a good one nonetheless.

10. STEP BROTHERS-Sorry. I still think Will Ferrell is hilarious. I cried in the theatre.

Movie occurence of '08 that nearly ruined my entire childhood:
INDIANA JONES

Only movie that was a bigger waste of money than Indy:
THE SPIRIT

Second best animated film (it's not Wall-E!!):
HORTON HEARS A WHO.

Movie event that was ground breaking and unbelievable but most people still probably missed:
U2 3D

Benjamin Button as number one? Really? Sometimes I think you do this just to spite me! While I thought the movie was good, it is definitely not the best picture of the year or worthy of 13 nominations. Three hours was WAY too long. I could have done with a lot less "old lady in the hospital" and the "perfect relationship" montage. All that kept me going through the last hour was (1) wondering how they got Cate and Brad to look so young, (2) making comparisons to Forrest Gump, and (3) thinking about how funny it was when Pete did his David Wilcox impression: "What if you could live your life BACKWAAAAARDS?"

BB is going down hard on Sunday... just wait.

I agree with Pegasaurus. BB is not best picture material. Brad Pitt's character was just too emotionally flat for me. Best Actor nom for that role? Really? Come on Academy.

Agreed on Revolutionary Road over The Reader. Being illiterate is more shameful than taking place in a mass execution? Really? I understand it was a metaphor for German ignorance of the atrocities...but I just don't buy it.

Did you see Waltz with Bashir? That's the best animated movie of the year (although it might be cheating).

BTW - have you ever seen "Reprise?" It's a 2006 Norwegian movie. Phenomenal.

everybody needs to lay off of the button. thats a solid movie. button being a top 5 of this year is a whole helluva lot more acceptable than dark knight being a top 2 of all time! and why does everybody hate brad pitt?? haters.

i'm with you on frost/nixon - best performances of the year. rev. road was a close second. not only do i no longer wish to get married, but i am now against any of my friends getting married as well. too much?

big fan of iron man. huge fan of slumdog. didnt see kung fu panda. honestly, i didnt get vicky or milk...which isnt to say they weren't good. but top 5? to me, vicky was just another woody allen movie with way to much voice over...and i love woody allen. this one just wasnt special to me. i understand milk politically at this point, especially out here with prop 8, but as a film, take it or leave it. i would have much rather seen the whole movie as a collision coarse between brolin's character and penn's character. i did think franco was great though.

Now i love will ferrell (dont think anyones funnier, actually), and step brothers was funny. but to me, it felt like just another long drug out snl skit. i'd much rather sit through one hour too long of (the three hour movie) button than to sit through one hour too long of (the one and a half hour) stepbros. i'm also on the sarah marshall bandwagon over this one too.

if you havent seen them, you need to check out - changeling and son of ranbow.

kyle-- glad you mentioned waltz with bashir. that was one of my favorites of the year (animated or not)... although i thought it seemed to be perhaps more about ari folman absolving himself than the actual death and destruction involved in the refugee massacre. but definitely if anyone has an interest in palestine/israel... see this film!
